Throughout this trimester, I worked with taking pictures and editing them in photoshop. At the beginning of the trimester I had no past experience with photography and everything I learned was new information. Aspects that I learned when it came to taking the pictures themselves included how to set them up to make it compositionally pleasing, working with the exposure triangle in the manual setting, and the importance of planning a picture out before shooting as opposed to just shooting any picture. In photoshop I learned how to adjust the colors of an image, use the stamp and clone tool, make frames, and a numerous amount of things. Below on the left is my worst photo next to my best photo, on the right, of the trimester. My worst photo is poorly composed, poorly exposed, and is very grainy as a result from a high ISO. On the other hand, my best photo is well composed as a result from the rule of thirds, well lit, and not grainy at all as a result of the lowest ISO setting. Additionally, a major aspect that I vastly improved on was shutter speed. I learned how to use the settings on the camera in order to sharpen an image, or create streaks, depending on the desire, while keeping the exposure well lit in order to create a well composed image. On the left is an example of a photo in which I did not understand how to use shutter speed to create a sharp, well lit image. This image is over exposed and the subject and background are not sharp. To the right of the first image is one which I improved my understanding of the shutter speed and was able to apply it to my images. In the second image the shutter speed is faster and as a result the image is better exposed and clearer. Finally, another major aspect that I improved on was understanding how to properly create an exposure for an image. I continued to learn how to use the settings on the camera in order to create a well lit image. On the left is an example of a photo in which I did not understand how to use the exposure triangle to create a well lit image. This image is under exposed and the subject is barley visible. To the right of this image is one in which the subject and the background are well exposed due to a better understanding of the exposure triangle. Here the settings are in manual mode and were well adjusted to create a properly composed and exposed photo.

For the last assignment, I went to downtown Ann Arbor and shot photos at night. While I was shooting, I had many people come up to me and ask me whether this was for a class or for enjoyment. In addition, I had many people tell me stories of themselves doing the same thing when they were younger. In this assignment I continued to learn how to work with the exposure triangle to get good lighting at night with occasional light streaks. My best photo is the one I took on S. Forest Ave looking across the street. In this assignment, we took multiple pictures of our classmates in a location throughout the school and placed them into photoshop to create a single image with this person multiple times. Throughout this assignment I learned how to stack photos and continued to learn how to work with layers in order to get multiple images of the same person into one photo. I did this by layering the images and then painting in or out the layer masks to make the image.
In this assignment, we took portraits of our classmates and placed them into photoshop to create frames around them. I continued to learn how to better utilize photoshop and in this case how to frame an image. I continued to learn how to use the marquee tool, the paint bucket tool, and layers.
Throughout this assignment, I shot objects against a plain, white bed sheet in order to create still life. I placed a desk lamp on the floor and had it face the subject in order to illuminate it. Throughout this assignment, I continued to learn how to control the exposure triangle to have the image well lit but clear at the same time. My best image is the one of the flowers in a mason jar against white bed sheets. In this assignment, I focused on light painting. I had my little brother, Joaquin, help me by either being the subject or swinging the light around while I shot. Throughout this shot, I continued to learn how to better use the manual setting to create the right lighting and compose the image well. My best image is the one in which my brother is the subject and he has a circle of light behind him. In this assignment, we took a multiple pictures of side by side frames within our school to create one larger panoramic image in photoshop. Throughout this, I learned how to better use the manual mode on the class cameras and how to frame the picture so that it would turn out well when stitched together in photoshop.
Throughout this shoot, I shot pictures of my dog, Lexie, in my house. During this session, she got into a playful mood and I took a break from shooting photos of her in order to play with her. In this shoot, I learned how to quickly adjust the camera setting in order to take a picture of her before she moved. My best image was the one in which Lexie was looking out the window. In this assignment, we took a picture within our school and placed it into photoshop to create a whole new context in our school. In my image, I took a picture of our stairs and added in children, Christmas characters, snow, and a night time scene. I continued to learn how to use photoshop to enhance a picture. New techniques I learned include, rasterizing, creating shadows, and cutting out images to makes the scene.
Throughout this shoot, I went to some nature trails and shot pictures of nature just after it had rained. During this session, I had to walk through some bushes and ended up getting stuck in some thorns. Luckily, I was able to successfully get out without any major cuts or scraps. In this shoot, I continued to learn how to use shutter speed, aperture, and ISO together to create a well lit and well composed image. My best image was the one of the leaf outlined with rainwater. |
